EHoM Conference 21st June 2016

On a brilliant sunny day in London we were welcomed again by the Royal Academy of Engineering as we participated in our second conference to celebrate the efforts and enthusiasm of our  ‘teacher heroes’ who have been implementing EHoM at primary, secondary and further education levels, and even in Early Years.

Teachers from the University of Manchester-led project Tinker Tailor Robot Pi and from the University of Winchester-led project Thinking Like an Engineer were joined this time by two teachers from Glasgow who have been implementing EHoM as part of an accredited CPD programme in engineering education led by Primary Engineer®.  The afternoon included presentations and discussion around the benefits and challenges of implementing EHoM across the curriculum.

We were joined by Peter Finegold, Head of Education and Skills at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMECHE), which published the report Big ideas in Engineering Education, in which EHoM featured.

Peter provided some reflections on the event and described what we are doing as ‘hugely exciting and demonstrates commitment for something real that connects teachers and pupils in a meaningful education’.

He recognised that ‘the Engineering Habits of Mind approach belongs in the mainstream within and across the curriculum, it should not be side-lined’.

Dr Rhys Morgan, Director of Engineering and Education at the Royal Academy of Engineering also said it was clear from the teachers’ presentations that EHoMs were not exclusive to engineering, they could be applied across the curriculum.
